[ It took what felt like half a damn hour for Sam to cave in. Granted, Dean didn't really expect anything less from it, halfway expecting Sam not to at all. His little brother was almost more stubborn than him when it came to his independent streaks, his need to do everything on his own, and yet all Dean wanted to do was help. He wasn't truly here to make fun or command he do better - they were here to learn. Dean wouldn't be doing this if he didn't want Sam to get something out of it, and so when Sam finally sank into himself, Dean breathed an air of relief.
Finally. ]
Once you get it outta first gear, everything's a breeze, okay- You gotta know that first of all.
[ Scooching over in his seat as far as he could go, Dean squirreled around until he could attempt to see the pedals, trying to think of the best way to explain how to go about this. ]
What we gotta work on is how press on the accelerator. Cause you got the clutch down, right? You can't let it go all at once, you gotta ease it up just as you ease on the gas.
[ He insisted, before squirming away, climbing over Dean's lap and pushing him out of the other seat. Dean had to get into the driving seat now, mostly because they were stuck in the corner of the lot, and Sam didn't even trust himself going forward, going backward was going to be gross and hard.
But Dean could turn the car around, show him how he was supposed to be doing it, and then set the car up for Sam and budge back over.
One way or another, he was going to drive the car around the lot in circles before they were done today. He needed to. He was afraid of never learning to drive, and the way he was protected from these new skills, apart from hand to hand fighting stuff and guns, obviously. ]
[ Dean had to refrain from cracking up as Sam scrambled across the seats, pushing him out of his spot and into the driver's. Sam had managed to cram them into an uncomfortable corner, which meant that Dean had to use his driving prowess to get them out of the spot without scraping a centimeter of paint off the Impala. Their dad would notice if even a hair was out of place, but Dean was trying not to let that fact overwhelm him - he was here to teach Sam how to drive, not to freak out about what their dad would think if he fucked it all up.
Getting comfortable in the seat, moving it to the right position and adjusting the mirror, Dean glanced around himself, checking everything before he looked back over to Sam. ]
Just- watch my feet, okay?
[ Really, Sam needed to keep an eye on everything, but that wasn't helpful in the slightest to say.
Putting the car in reverse, Dean pulled the car out of the spot that Sam had crammed it into before he twisted it around on a dime, driving it back to a more tolerable position. Dean wanted it somewhere safe enough that Sam could experiment without breaking anything, but something not too easy as to keep him from actually learning. ]
[ Sam did pay a lot more attention to Dean's feet this time, although he was watching a lot more than that. It still seemed pretty hairy reversing away from the curb they'd nudged up against, particularly in a car as large as the Impala.
Often, when they drove past other cars on the road, Sam wondered if they wouldn't be more comfortable in an SUV. It would probably cost less in gas as well. But the big back seat and even more spacious trunk...
And if not a big car, then what about a Winnebago? They could pretend if was a home, and they wouldn't even have to pay motel bills. Plus there would be more room for their dad's weapons stash. Sam couldn't help but think that they just hadn't thought it through.
He waited until the car was still, then nodded at Dean. ]
Okay, I think I got it. I don't have to reverse, though, right?
